Check Engine Light and Vehicle Diagnostics in Northeast Edmonton

A warning light tells you something is wrong, but not what. At Just Auto on 66 Street NW, our mechanics scan your vehicle's computers and then test the systems behind the warning, so you find out what is actually causing it, on all makes and models. If your check engine light is flashing or the vehicle is running poorly, call us before you keep driving.

Signs you need it

  • The check engine light is on, or flashing
  • Another warning light is on, such as ABS, traction control, battery or temperature
  • The engine misfires, idles roughly, hesitates or stalls
  • The vehicle has lost power, or fuel economy has suddenly dropped
  • It is hard to start, or does not start at all
  • A new smell, noise or vibration that was not there before

How it works at Just Auto

  1. Book a diagnostic visit online or call (780) 340-0258. Tell us what the light is, when it came on, and anything the vehicle is doing differently.
  2. We connect a scan tool and read the trouble codes your vehicle's computers have stored.
  3. We test the systems behind those codes. A code points to an area, and the testing finds the part that has actually failed.
  4. We explain what we found and give you an estimate for the repair.
  5. Nothing is repaired until you approve it.

A code is not a diagnosis

A parts-store code reader can tell you a code such as P0300 (misfire), but not why it is happening. The same code can come from a worn spark plug, a failing ignition coil, a vacuum leak or a fuel problem. Replacing parts until the light goes off costs more than finding the cause first.

That is why our diagnostics go past reading the code. We check the readings the computer is seeing, look at the parts involved, and test the circuit or component the code points to. You get an answer, not a guess.

Solid or flashing

  • A solid check engine light usually means a fault that should be looked at soon, but is not an emergency. Book a visit and note anything the vehicle is doing differently.
  • A flashing check engine light usually means a severe misfire, which can overheat and damage the catalytic converter. Ease off, avoid hard acceleration, and call us before you keep driving.
  • A red warning light, such as oil pressure or engine temperature, means stop as soon as it is safe and turn the engine off.

Cold weather and warning lights

Edmonton winters bring their own warning lights. A weak battery can set off several lights at once, because the computers see low voltage on a cold start. Low tire pressure on a cold morning turns on the tire pressure light. A loose gas cap can trigger the check engine light at any time of year. Some of these are simple fixes, but they are worth checking rather than ignoring. If the lights started on a cold morning, our battery testing may be the place to begin.

Questions

Can I keep driving with the check engine light on?

If it is solid and the vehicle drives normally, you can usually drive it to an appointment, but do not ignore it. If it is flashing, or the vehicle is running poorly, ease off and call us before you drive further.

Why did the light come on and then go off?

Some faults are intermittent. The computer may turn the light off after several trips without the fault, but it keeps the code stored, and we can read it.

Can a loose gas cap really turn on the check engine light?

Yes. The evaporative system checks for leaks, and a cap that is not tightened can set a code. Tighten it until it clicks. If the light stays on after a few days of driving, have it checked.

Will you fix it on the spot?

We find the cause first, then explain it and give you an estimate. Nothing is repaired until you approve it.

Do you work on all makes and models?

Yes. Book a diagnostic visit online or call with your vehicle's year, make and model.
