Battery Testing and Replacement in Northeast Edmonton
An Edmonton cold snap finds a weak battery fast. At Just Auto on 66 Street NW, we test your battery and the charging system that keeps it topped up, and recommend replacement only when the test says you need it. Before any work, we tell you what we found and give you an estimate, and nothing is done without your OK.
Signs you need it
- The engine cranks slowly, especially on a cold morning
- You needed a boost to start, more than once
- The dash lights or headlights dim when you start the vehicle
- Several warning lights come on at once at start-up
- The battery is more than a few years old and has never been tested
- You see white or green corrosion on the battery terminals
How it works at Just Auto
- Book online or call (780) 340-0258, and tell us how the vehicle has been starting.
- We test the battery itself, to see how much starting power it still has, not just whether it holds a charge.
- We test the charging system, because a weak alternator can drain a good battery.
- We tell you what we found. If the battery needs replacing, we give you an estimate, and replace it when you approve.
Why batteries fail in the cold
A battery makes power through a chemical reaction, and that reaction slows down as the temperature drops. On a −30 °C morning, a battery has noticeably less power to give, at the same moment the engine needs more to turn over thick, cold oil. A battery that worked fine in October can fail on the first hard cold snap.
Short trips make it worse. Starting the engine takes a lot out of the battery, and a ten-minute drive in the cold, with the heater, lights and defrosters on, may not put it all back. Several days of that, and the battery is too low to start the engine.
Battery or alternator?
A dead battery and a failing alternator can look the same from the driver's seat: the vehicle will not start. The difference matters. If the alternator is not charging, a new battery will go flat again within days. Testing both before replacing anything means you pay for the part that actually failed. If several warning lights are on at once, our vehicle diagnostics can check what else the low voltage has affected.
Before winter
A battery test is a good idea every fall, before the first cold snap, especially on a battery that is several years old. If you are buying a used vehicle, check the battery date and have it tested. Keeping the terminals clean, and plugging in on the coldest nights, both help a battery through the winter. Our first snow checklist covers the rest of a winter check.

Questions
How long does a car battery last in Edmonton?
It depends on the battery, the vehicle and how it is driven. Cold winters, hot summers and lots of short trips all shorten its life. Testing tells you more than age alone.
My car started after a boost. Do I still need a new battery?
Maybe not. The battery may have been run down by lights left on, or by short trips. A test shows whether it can still hold a full charge and deliver starting power, or whether it is failing.
Can a bad alternator kill a new battery?
Yes. If the alternator is not charging, the battery drains every time you drive. That is why we test the charging system as well as the battery.
Will you replace the battery without asking?
No. We test first, tell you what we found and give you an estimate. Nothing is replaced until you approve it.
