Brake Repair in Northeast Edmonton

Brakes are the one system you cannot afford to guess about. At Just Auto on 66 Street NW, our mechanics inspect and repair brake pads, rotors, calipers and the parts around them, front and rear, on all makes and models. Before any work, we show you what we found and give you an estimate, and nothing is done without your OK.

Signs you need it

  • Squealing or squeaking when you brake, often the wear indicator on the pads
  • Grinding or scraping, which can mean the pads are worn through to metal
  • Vibration or pulsing through the pedal or steering wheel when you stop
  • A soft or spongy pedal, or one that sinks closer to the floor than it used to
  • The vehicle pulls to one side when you brake
  • Longer stopping distances, or a brake warning light on the dash

How it works at Just Auto

  1. Book brake service online or call (780) 340-0258, and tell us what you are hearing or feeling.
  2. We inspect the pads, rotors, calipers and related hardware at the front and rear.
  3. We show you what we found and what is worn, and give you an estimate.
  4. Nothing is done until you approve it. You decide what we do now and what can wait.
  5. We do the work you approved, and tell you when your vehicle is ready.

What gets checked

A brake job is more than pads. We look at the whole system that stops your vehicle:

  • Pads. We measure how much friction material is left, and look for uneven wear that points to another problem.
  • Rotors. We check them for scoring, grooves, heat spots and warping, which is what causes the pulsing you feel in the pedal.
  • Calipers. A caliper that sticks or does not release fully wears pads fast on one side, and can make the vehicle pull.
  • Hardware. Clips, pins and slides need to move freely, or the pads drag and wear out early.
  • Brake fluid and lines. We check the fluid level and look for leaks. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time; our fluid services cover replacing it.

If the brake warning light or the ABS light is on, a computer scan helps find why. Our vehicle diagnostics covers that.

Brakes and an Edmonton winter

Road salt and winter slush are hard on brakes. Salt speeds up rust on rotors and caliper hardware, and a vehicle that sits for days in the cold can develop a stiff caliper or a rotor with a rusted lip. Spring is a good time for a brake check after a winter of salt, and so is the fall, before the first icy stop.

Stopping on ice depends on both brakes and tires. Good brakes cannot make up for worn or hardened tires, and the reverse is also true. If your tires are due for a seasonal change, our tire centre can do both at once.

Questions

How do I know if I need new brake pads or new rotors?

Squealing usually means the pads are getting low. Grinding, or a pulsing pedal, often means the rotors are affected too. The only way to know for sure is to take the wheels off and measure. We show you what we found and quote the work before we start.

How long do brake pads last?

It depends on the vehicle, the pads and how you drive. Stop-and-go city driving and heavy loads wear them faster than highway driving. Have them checked whenever you hear new noises, and during your seasonal tire change.

Is it safe to drive with a brake warning light on?

A brake warning light can mean low fluid, a hydraulic problem or that the parking brake is on. If it stays on, or the pedal feels different, have it looked at before you drive any further than you must.

Will you do work I did not ask for?

No. We explain what we found and give you an estimate first. You decide what gets done.

Do you work on trucks and SUVs?

We work on all makes and models. Book brake service online or call with your vehicle's year, make and model.
