Suspension and Steering Repair in Northeast Edmonton
Edmonton roads are hard on suspension. Potholes, frost heaves and rutted winter streets wear out the parts that keep your vehicle steady and your tires flat on the road. At Just Auto on 66 Street NW, our mechanics inspect shocks, struts, control arms, bushings, ball joints and tie rods on all makes and models, and we can arrange a wheel alignment once the parts are right. Before any work, we show you what we found and give you an estimate, and nothing is done without your OK.
Signs you need it
- A clunk or knock over bumps, potholes or railway crossings
- The vehicle pulls to one side, or wanders and needs constant correction
- Uneven or fast tire wear, such as one edge wearing before the other
- A rough, bouncy or floaty ride, or the nose dives when you brake
- The steering wheel is off-centre when you drive straight
- Steering that feels loose, or a vibration through the wheel
How it works at Just Auto
- Book an inspection online or call (780) 340-0258, and tell us what you are hearing or feeling, and when.
- We inspect the shocks or struts, control arms and bushings, ball joints and tie rod ends for wear, play and leaks.
- We look at your tire wear, which often shows what is wrong underneath.
- We show you what we found and give you an estimate. Nothing is done until you approve it.
- If worn parts are replaced, we can arrange a wheel alignment afterwards, so the vehicle tracks straight and the tires wear evenly.
What the parts do
- Shocks and struts control how the vehicle moves over bumps. Worn ones make the ride bouncy and the vehicle less stable in braking and cornering.
- Control arms and bushings hold each wheel in place. Worn bushings cause clunks and vague steering.
- Ball joints let the front wheels pivot and steer. A worn ball joint can knock over bumps, and is a safety concern if it is left too long.
- Tie rod ends connect the steering to the wheels. Wear shows up as loose steering and uneven tire wear.
Alignment comes after the parts
A wheel alignment sets the angles of your wheels so they point straight and sit flat on the road. Hitting a pothole hard can knock it out, and so can replacing a steering or suspension part. But an alignment cannot fix a worn part. If a tie rod or ball joint has play in it, the alignment will not hold. That is why we inspect the parts first, then arrange the alignment.
If your tires are wearing unevenly, a suspension check is worth doing before you buy new ones. Otherwise the new tires wear the same way. Our tire centre can look at tire wear during a seasonal changeover.
Pothole season
Spring thaw in Edmonton brings potholes, and a hard hit can bend a wheel, damage a tire or knock the alignment out. If the steering wheel is suddenly off-centre, or the vehicle pulls after hitting a pothole, have it checked. Uneven wear only gets worse with time.

Questions
What is the difference between shocks and struts?
Both control how your vehicle moves over bumps. A strut is also part of the suspension's structure and holds the spring, while a shock only damps the movement. Many vehicles have struts at the front and shocks at the rear.
Do I need an alignment after new tires?
It is not always required, but it is a good idea if the old tires wore unevenly, or if the vehicle pulls. An alignment helps new tires last.
Is a clunk over bumps dangerous?
It depends on what is causing it. Some clunks are worn bushings or sway bar links. Others are ball joints, which affect steering. Have it inspected rather than waiting for it to get louder.
Will you replace parts without asking?
No. We inspect, show you what we found and give you an estimate first. You decide what gets done.
