Fluid Services in Northeast Edmonton
Oil is not the only fluid your vehicle depends on. Coolant, brake fluid and transmission fluid all wear out over time, and they rarely give a warning before something fails. At Just Auto on 66 Street NW, we inspect and service vehicle fluids according to their condition and your vehicle's maintenance schedule, on all makes and models. Before any service, we tell you what we found and give you an estimate, and nothing is done without your OK.
Signs you need it
- Your maintenance schedule lists a fluid service by time or distance
- Coolant is low, or the temperature gauge runs higher than usual
- The heater blows cool air on a cold day
- The brake pedal feels soft, or the brake fluid is dark
- The transmission shifts late, harshly or slips
- You see coloured fluid under the vehicle, or smell something sweet or burnt
How it works at Just Auto
- Book online or call (780) 340-0258. If your vehicle is due by its schedule, bring the service book or tell us the last fluid service.
- We check each fluid's level and condition, and look for leaks.
- We compare what we see with your vehicle's maintenance schedule.
- We tell you what needs servicing now and what can wait, and give you an estimate.
- Nothing is serviced until you approve it. We use the fluid type your manufacturer specifies.
The fluids we look after
- Coolant (antifreeze) keeps the engine from overheating in summer and freezing in winter, and protects the cooling system from corrosion. Old coolant loses that protection, and the wrong mix can freeze in an Edmonton January.
- Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air over time. Moisture lowers its boiling point and causes corrosion inside the brake system, which can lead to a soft pedal. See our brake repair page for the rest of the brake system.
- Transmission fluid cools and lubricates the transmission. Fluid that is old or overheated can lead to rough shifting and wear.
- Other fluids, such as power steering fluid where the vehicle has a hydraulic system, and differential or transfer case fluid on many 4WD and AWD vehicles, are checked against the maintenance schedule too.
Right fluid, right interval
Modern vehicles are specific about their fluids. Coolants come in different chemistries, and transmissions often need one exact fluid. Mixing the wrong types can cause damage. We follow what your manufacturer specifies, and your owner's manual or maintenance schedule sets the interval. Severe service, such as towing, short trips and extreme cold, often shortens it.
Before winter
A cooling system check before winter confirms the coolant is mixed for the cold and there are no leaks. Cold starts are also hard on fluids generally, which is one reason our oil change includes a look under the hood. Our first snow checklist covers the rest of a winter check.

Questions
How often should coolant, brake fluid and transmission fluid be changed?
It varies a lot between vehicles. Your owner's manual or maintenance schedule gives the interval, often both a time and a distance. Bring it in, or tell us the year, make and model, and we will check.
Can I just top up instead of changing the fluid?
Topping up restores the level, but not the fluid's condition. If a fluid is old or contaminated, it needs replacing. If it keeps going low, there is a leak to find.
Is it a problem if I see fluid under my vehicle?
It can be. Note the colour and where it is. Green, orange or pink is often coolant, and red can be transmission or power steering fluid. Clear water from the air conditioning is normal in summer. Have any other leak checked.
Will you service fluids without asking?
No. We check them, tell you what we found and give you an estimate first. You decide what gets done.
